Destinations: A World in Motion—”A fusion of music and movement from around the world.”
He Wishes For the Cloths of Heaven, Bradley Ellingboe
(Walton Music)
Text by W. B. Yeats, the composer declares that the composition itself falls into two halves. The first half more tentative in spirit, since the speaker in the poem is a bit unsure as to how his or her declaration of love will be
received. During the second half the suitor becomes more confident and elated. The piece closes with less
hesitation as the composer believes by this time, the one being courted will say “yes!”
Wanna Baraka, , arr. Shawn L. Kirchner
(Santa Barbara Music Publishing)
Wana Baraka is a traditional Kenyan song sung in Swahili, a pan-African language. The text states:
They have blessings (baraka), peace (amani), joy (furaha), well-being (uzima); those who pray;
Jesus himself said so. Alleluia!
Usuli Boat Song, Shui Jiang Tian
(Earthsongs)
Kiel Fauske, solo
This folksong is from the Hezhe tribe of Northeastern China. The Usuli Boat Song is very famous in China.
The setting of this fishing song describes the beauty of their surroundings and the industry of their people.
The lilting melody, punctuated by the shouts of the working fisherman can be viewed as a look into
the everyday lifestyle of the tribe.
Zikr, A.R. Rahman
arr. Ethan Sperry
(Earthsongs)
Charles Trowbridge, guitar; Chris Leavitt & Neil Facciuto, percussion
Zikr was originally written by A. R. Rahman for an Indian documentary film. While the text of Zikr is religious, the piece is not intended for worship ceremony. It is based upon the music of the whirling dervishes, Sufi Muslim
musicians who perform this style of music from Egypt across the Silk Road to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan,
India, Thailand and Malaysia. In this style, the musicians pick a chant and elaborate upon it while dancers spin in a circle. As the tempo increases, the dancers spin faster and faster hoping to achieve a trance-like state in which they can commune with the divine. This arrangement begins with the chant melody alternating with sections of
the choir chanting “Hu Allah” (God is One).
Carpuela Lindo, arr. Eugenio Auz
(Earthsongs)
Allison Bassett, solo; Chris Leavitt & Neil Facciuto, percussion
Carpuela Lindo is a tradition “bomba” that hails from the northern area in Ecuador known as Valle del Chota. “Bomba” groups are small groups of musicians who primarily use the voice to imitate percussive instruments.
The buzzing sound that you will hear, will be the singers playing of an orange leaf held in between both hands.
The text of the work talks about having to leave our beloved city and go east to the oil fields to work, while never forgetting what our home means to us.
Molly Bahn, , arr. J. Benjamin Jones
(Manuscript)
Turn the World Around, arr. Larry Farrow
(Hal Leonard)
Sarah Bomberger, piano; Chris Leavitt & Neil Facciuto, percussion
Another great Belefonte classic from Farrow which asks the profound question, “Do you know who I am? Do I know who you are?” The answer is based on simple universal truths found in nature – fire, earth and water. The text leaves one to ponder: If these elements from which we are made are of the body of God, then so must we be also. The mountain is a wonderful metaphor for the divinity which resides in us all. Abatee, wa, ha! So is Life!

Oh happy springtime, golden youth of the year, radiant bringer of flowers,
bringer of tender grass and a newly sprung love.
How dreary and drab you seem without the sunny days that I hoped and looked so long for.
Yet, you’re the same, unchanging, but grown more lovely now than ever.
‘Tis I who am no longer what I once was when fair eyes smiled upon me.
